Trump campaign reimburses Winklevoss twins after bitcoin donations exceed limit, reports Bloomberg News By Reuters
(Reuters) – The billionaire Winklevoss twins, founders of cryptocurrency company Gemini, have been reimbursed after their bitcoin donations to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign exceeded the maximum amount allowed under federal law, Bloomberg News reported on Friday .
Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, whose crypto firm reached settlement agreements in February with U.S. and New York state financial regulators following allegations of wrongdoing, each announced donations of $1 million in bitcoin in posts on the social media site On thursday.
His donations exceeded the maximum $844,600 the Trump committee can legally accept per person, according to the report. The portion above that limit was refunded to donors, the report said, citing a campaign official.
A Trump campaign spokesperson did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
The donations came after Trump portrayed himself as a supporter of cryptography, including at a fundraiser in San Francisco this month with technology executives, during which he criticized Democrats’ attempts to regulate the crypto sector.
