The Government of Tanzania, in collaboration with the African Blockchain Association (UABA), has launched a strategic effort to enhance knowledge transfer and experience sharing on blockchain technology. This initiative aims to raise awareness among public and private institutions about the application and benefits of blockchain technology in Tanzania.

This collaborative effort involves various stakeholders, including experts from the Electronic Government Authority (eGA), banking institutions, academia, young innovators, key government stakeholders, and external technocrats. The aim is to bring together diverse perspectives and expertise to promote a comprehensive understanding of blockchain technology and its potential applications in the country.

Aiming for technological progress

Inaugurating a two-day workshop that concluded today, e-GA Director General Eng. Benedict Ndomba highlighted the importance of this workshop as a crucial step in ensuring that Tanzania stays abreast of the latest technological advances, such as blockchain. He outlined the main objective of the workshop, which is to establish a common understanding, formulate resolutions and develop a strategy for the introduction of blockchain and digital currency in Tanzania.

Mr. Ndomba highlighted the widespread global adoption of blockchain technology and stressed that Tanzania, as a nation, must not be left behind. He said it is crucial for the government to gain in-depth knowledge of this technology before its implementation. The workshop is designed to facilitate the sharing of experiences and expertise among officials from various sectors, including financial institutions, telecommunications companies and government bodies, with the aim of leveraging the technology to provide improved services.

The potential benefits of blockchain technology in streamlining the delivery of services to citizens were also highlighted by Mr. Ndomba. He suggested that once the technology is fully developed, it could significantly improve the efficiency and quality of public services.

Embracing Digital Transformation

Zanzibar e-GA Director General, Mr. Said Seif Said, echoed the government’s commitment to promoting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to ensure digital transformation and growth of a digital economy across Tanzania. This commitment is reflected in the various initiatives and efforts undertaken to integrate blockchain technology into the country’s ICT framework.

e-GA Information Services Supervisor, Mr. Ricco Boma, expressed optimism about the workshop’s outcomes. He indicated that participants would gain valuable knowledge and experience regarding the creation and operation of blockchain and digital currencies. This understanding is expected to contribute to the overall betterment of the nation and its people.

Mr. Boma further explained that the government, through e-GA, is enabling public institutions to improve the delivery of services to citizens. He mentioned the establishment of a research center at the University of Dodoma, which focuses on conducting research on digital currencies in collaboration with the Bank of Tanzania. This research center is expected to play a vital role in promoting the understanding and application of digital currencies in the country.

Recognizing forward-thinking initiatives

AUBA Chairperson, Ms. Yaliwe Mlambo, commended the Government of Tanzania for its proactive approach in adopting the technological skills needed to keep pace with the rapidly changing world. She acknowledged that with this initiative, Tanzania is making great strides in digital technology, which will ultimately unite the government and private sector to serve citizens more effectively.
