Sui Sets a New Standard for Blockchain Transaction Speed
Expected to arrive on Mainnet this summer, Sui’s new Mysticeti protocol reduces consensus latency to 390 ms.
Sui, the pioneering Layer 1 blockchain offering industry-leading performance and infinite horizontal scalability, today announced the successful implementation of Mysticeti, its latest consensus protocol, on Sui Testnet. This significant breakthrough reduces consensus times on Sui’s public Testnet by 80% to 390 milliseconds, while maintaining the protocol’s industry-leading throughput. This impressive demonstration confirms that Sui is the fastest consensus level in the industry.
Developed from extensive research into Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus mechanisms, Mysticeti represents a significant advancement over Narwhal-Bullshark, the consensus algorithm launched by Sui in its Mainnet a year ago, achieving unprecedented transaction speeds and reducing CPU requirements for validators. This improvement extends Sui’s impressive low-latency performance to all types of transactions on the network.
Sui’s unique object-oriented architecture allows the network to process transactions differently based on the characteristics of the transaction and the objects involved. On Sui, transactions involving only “proprietary objects,” such as peer-to-peer transfers, do not require consent. Instead, they follow a quick execution that can be completed in a shorter time. In contrast, transactions involving the same shared object, such as transactions involving marketplaces, auctions, or collaborative game assets, require consensus. In the past, this meant higher processing latencies. Mysticeti changes that by processing shared object transactions using an optimized version of BFT consensus. The Mysticeti design has minimal communication between validators and takes full advantage of network bandwidth to maintain high throughput.
“Mysticeti represents a big step forward, not just for Sui but for blockchain technology as a whole,” said George Danezis, co-founder and chief scientist of Mysten Labs which originated the Sui network and a pioneer of global consensus research BFT. “It reduces consensus latency to what we understand to be lower bounds, while maintaining the benefits of high capacity and low computational cost. It also allows transactions to be processed faster than consensus within the same protocol, a unique feature of Sui. Mysticeti is yet another example of Sui pushing the boundaries of what blockchain technology can achieve.”
Results on Testnet were impressive, demonstrating the ability to transact with an 80% reduction in latency compared to Narwhal. The enhancement implemented by Mysticeti significantly reduces complexity and optimizes resource usage, allowing the Sui network to handle tens of thousands of transactions per second with latencies well below a second.
These advancements are critical as Sui continues to solidify its position at the pinnacle of blockchain speed and scalability and provides a seamless experience for developers and users at scale.
“The launch of Mysticeti is the result of a successful collaboration between research, engineering and our validator community,” said Dmitri Perelman, head of engineering at Mysten Labs. “The lessons we learned by building and fine-tuning previous generation consensus in manufacturing gave researchers the context and inspiration to craft the new protocol. After the first Mysticeti prototype demonstrated undeniable performance superiority, the engineering team was fully engaged and the next-generation consensus implementation will be rolled out on Mainnet with validator support within a few months.”
Kevin Nelson, co-founder of Aftermath Finance, said: “With Mysticeti, Mysten has demonstrated that the DAG-based framework can outperform the state-of-the-art in terms of both consensus throughput and, importantly, latency. At Aftermath, we’re excited to see Mysticeti release on testnet and even more excited when it touches the hands of our users with its Mainnet release. Additionally, we look forward to leveraging Mysticeti’s new design to provide a better end-to-end experience on Aftermath.”
Greg Siourounis, CEO of the Sui Foundation, added: “Low latency and high transaction speed have always been central to Sui’s value as a top choice for builders, and with Mysticeti, the developer experience becomes even better improve. This breakthrough once again demonstrates a continuous and relentless focus on innovation, unlocking new possibilities for the types and quality of decentralized applications that can be built on Sui.”
Mysticeti’s key innovations are detailed in the newly published paper, “Mysticeti: Low latency DAG consensus with fast commit path“, which shows the scalability of this new technology and is available for review.
