Sam Altman’s Layer-2 Blockchain Project, World Chain, Opens Up to Developers
The development company behind the Worldcoin protocol announced on Tuesday that its upcoming layer 2 chain, World Chain, is open to developers.
This means that select developers can apply to build, test and provide feedback to Tools For Humanity, the development company behind Worldcoin, according to a press release shared with CoinDesk.
World Chain leveraged Optimism’s OP Stack, a Customizable tool kit which allows developers to create their own blockchains using Optimism’s technology, to build their own network. OP Stack has become a popular choice for creating layer 2 chains, and has been used by Coinbase to build his ‘Base’ net.
“I think they are visionaries, the team behind it, they’ve been working on it for a while,” Remco Bloemen, head of blockchain at the Worldcoin Foundation, the nonprofit behind Worldcoin, said in an interview with CoinDesk.
World Chain is expected to open to users by the end of the summer, as previously reported from CoinDesk. Bloemen declined to provide an exact timeline for when the mainnet will go live, but said they have no plans to open a testnet for users.
“This will evolve into mainnet at some point. But it’s just an opportunity for people to test their infrastructure and be ready for when this goes mainnet,” Bloemen told CoinDesk.
Additionally, the World Chain project will shadow-run Reth, a new Ethereum client software developed by venture capital firm Paradigm, and Tools for Humanity plans to commit engineering resources to mainnet-ready Reth.
Reth is a new client for the Ethereum network, developed by Paradigm, with an emphasis on being “user-friendly, modular, fast and efficient”, according to to the Paradigm websiteWhile Reth is typically used for the Ethereum network, Paradigm said it will cater to a broad user base, including layer 2 networks like Optimism.
