Nigeria Set to Develop Indigenous Blockchain “Nigerium” to Promote Data Sovereignty
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has made public its plan to develop an indigenous blockchain called “Nigerium” to protect the country’s data and promote national security.
This move was prompted by the discovery that most of the popular blockchain technologies, such as Ethereum, were controlled by foreign developers who may not prioritize Nigeria’s interests.
NITDA Director General Kashifu Abdullahi announced this plan while receiving delegates from the University of Hertfordshire’s law school in Abuja, saying that the proposed project will bring the private sector to collaborate with the public sector to develop a national blockchain.
Mr. Abdullahi agreed that the proposed blockchain would enhance national security and data security of citizens. He strongly emphasized the importance of developing an indigenous blockchain as it would help Nigeria have full control over its data and locations.
The idea for the Nigerium project, a national blockchain for Nigeria, was initially proposed and presented by a delegation from the University of Hertfordshire Law School, led by Chanu Kuppuswamy.

Chanu argued that developing a national blockchain for Nigeria would allow the country to customize the technology to its needs and ensure that it is in line with the country’s laws and regulations.
Chanu also stressed the potential risks of relying on foreign-made blockchains, citing the example of when Ethereum recently made significant changes to its blockchain without consulting its users. He noted that if Nigeria were to adopt a foreign blockchain, it would be difficult for the country to impose its influence on key decisions regarding the blockchain.
The Hertfordshire delegation led by Chanu Kuppuswamy also suggested that Nigeria establish a data embassy. This embassy will include a server hosted in a third country that will provide digital continuity and protect the country’s data from adverse events such as natural disasters, cyber attacks and other threats.
The delegation finally suggested that Nigeria consider harmonizing blockchain technology among government agencies to promote interoperability and interdependence.
