Hackers steal $305 million from cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin
Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin confirmed on Friday that it was the victim of a hack that resulted in the theft of 4,502.9 bitcoins, or about $305 million.
According to cryptographic security firm Ellipticthis is the eighth largest crypto theft in history.
DMM Bitcoin said it detected “an unauthorized leak of Bitcoin (BTC) from our wallet” on Friday and that it was still investigating and had taken steps to prevent further thefts. The cryptocurrency exchange said it has also “implemented restrictions on the use of some services to ensure additional security,” according to an automated translation of post on the company’s official blog (written in Japanese).
The company also promised that all customers’ Bitcoin deposits “will be fully guaranteed as we will acquire the equivalent amount of leaked BTC with the support of our group companies.”
DMM Bitcoin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to De.Fi, the web3 security company that tracks crypto thefts and scams, hackers stole around $2 billion worth of crypto in dozens of cyberattacks and robberies last year. While it’s still a massive amount of crypto, the total was the lowest since 2020.
