Cryptocurrencies surged Saturday night moments after former President Trump was shot while speaking at a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania.
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) briefly dipped to around $58,448 at 6:15 p.m. ET before rising 2.4% to $59,909 in the hours that followed.
The Solana TRUMP meme coin more than doubled in value following news of the incident. The MAGA coin rose 30%.
The Secret Service carried Trump off the stage bleeding around his ear after shots were fired at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump later said in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, that he had been “shot with a bullet that pierced the top of my right ear.”
The shooting was being investigated as an attempted murder, law enforcement officials said. A Secret Service spokesman said one rally attendee was killed in the shooting, and the suspected shooter was killed by Secret Service.
