Bitcoin mining causes health problems for Texas residents
Texas is quickly becoming a Bitcoin mining hub, but residents of local cities are experiencing hearing problems, headaches, dizziness and sleep disorders.
The conflict between economic interests of Bitcoin (BTC) mining in Texas and the quality of life for its residents is improving, highlighting the need for comprehensive policy solutions.
Texas is home for 10 of the top 34 Bitcoin mines in the United States. In 2021, when China decided to crack down on Bitcoin mining, several mining companies like Digital Marathon and Hut 8 moved to Texas because of its affordable energy and access to renewable energy.
Texas attracts Bitcoin miners due to its relatively low energy costs and deregulated power gridwhich offers more flexibility and competitive pricing. In addition, the state’s favorable regulatory environment and abundant renewable energy sources make it an attractive destination for mining operations.
On July 9, Hut 8 announced its expansion into West Texas. quoting “some of the lowest wholesale energy prices in North America.”
However, this influx of miners also had adverse effects on local residents.
Health effects
Texas residents have reported noise levels from Bitcoin miners as high as 91 decibels, according to Time. According to Hearing Health Foundationsounds exceeding 70 decibels cause hearing damage over time.
This is comparable to the noise levels of a lawnmower or chainsaw, and can potentially cause long-term hearing damage. Some residents have been officially diagnosed with hearing loss problems due to noise.
Other reported health problems include loss of sleep, dizziness, lightheadedness, dizziness, and fainting. These health problems may be especially prevalent among older residents.
