AT&T Should Have Stored Its Data on Blockchain, Executive Claims — TradingView News

A Web3 executive believes that the data breach by multinational telecommunications company AT&T could have been avoided if it had stored its data inside the blockchain.

On July 12, the telecommunications company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it had learned from an investigation that the company had suffered a breach that could have put its customers’ data at risk.

According to the documentation, the attackers accessed and copied call logs stored in a third-party cloud provider. The data contained call records, text messages, and phone numbers.

While the content of the communications was not compromised, the company believes there are ways to discover the names associated with the phone numbers and that hackers could use tools to determine the identities of their customers.

AT&T Breach Highlights Problems With Web2 Services

Tim Kravchunovsky, founder and CEO of decentralized telecommunications network Chirp, believes the event highlights vulnerabilities in the networks people rely on most.

The executive argued that since this is the second breach report, the event appears to be “becoming the rule, rather than the exception.” The Web3 professional also highlighted the length of time it took to report the breach. Kravchunovsky said:

“It’s also concerning that it takes more than two years to report these breaches, so there’s no guarantee that something similar isn’t happening right now.”

Kravchunovsky said this could have put millions of customers at risk by allowing hackers to identify their homes, workplaces and connections. This could have allowed scammers to target them more effectively.

For this reason, the manager argued that current technological solutions do not work and that new solutions are needed.
